Gerald Harter - Honoring a Past Chairman

By John Richardson
Gerald Harter - Honoring a Past Chairman

I knew Jerry for over 8 years and always looked to him when it came to clients who wanted to start or improve their retail store business.

He had decades of experience running his upper State Street popular family shoe store, Jr. Shoetown.

Although he had "retired" years beflore, at the age of 80 he opened SAS shoes at the same location, finally retiring at the age of 84.

I reached out to some of our more senior Counselors who knew Jerry best for their comments.

"Trusted friend and counselor."

"When a client was assigned to him, he was diligent to serve and to offer the best advice available. "

"Good sense of humor, charitable to his fellow man."

"I remember SCORE under Jerry's leadership to be a friendly organization. We met every Wednesday. Provided advice to clients who walked in. Jokes among the members and old stories were the rule rather than an exception. Lunch with conversations about clients and nothing at all concluded most meetings."

"He was a special man who cared deeply about others."

In addition to his business interests, he was a stalwart supporter of the community. He was a member of the grand jury, a past president of the Jewish Federation, and a driving force with ADL who honored him with Man of the Year award.

He will be missed.

Thank you to the wonderful mentors of SCORE who have helped me for the past many years overcome my resistance to marketing my mosaic art.
